‘Since each story presents its own technical problems, obviously one can’t generalize about them on a two-times-two-equals-four basis. Finding the right form for your story is simply to realize the most natural way of telling the story. The test of whether or not a writer has divined the natural shape of his story is just this: after reading it, can you imagine it differently, or does it silence your imagination and seem to you absolute and final? As an orange is final. As an orange is something nature has made just right.’ – Truman Capote (The Paris Review, 1957)

We look for consistency and completeness. Work isn’t chosen based on the personal tastes of the editors, but whether it works as a fully realised story. If you can show that yours does, from first sentence to last, it’s probably a good fit for Nicotiana Magazine. That said, there are some works we don’t consider. Read the guidelines below to find out if your story is right for us and how to submit.

Nicotiana is a literary fiction and creative non-fiction magazine; we exclusively consider literary fiction and creative non-fiction. Any work falling outside these categories, including genre fiction, poetry and highly technical or academic non-fiction, will be rejected.

We accept work 500 to 4,000 words in length. Exceptions can be made on either side of this, but only for outstanding pieces. Currently we only accept submissions in English.

Response times range from one week to three months, depending on the present volume of submissions and the circumstances of the editors. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please notify us at if your piece is accepted elsewhere. Multiple submissions are not accepted, but you’re welcome and encouraged to submit to us again two months from the date of your last response.

Your cover letter should specify whether your work is fiction or non-fiction and its exact word count, and include a publishable author biography, written in third-person and up to 100 words in length. Send all work to, pasting it into the body of the email and ensuring your original formatting has been preserved. Emails with attachments will be deleted unread.

There are no submission fees. Payment for accepted work is £3.00, paid via PayPal in British Pound Sterling. Think of it as coffee on us. This amount will be paid to the author’s account within one week or on the day of publication.

By accepting publication with us, we ask that you refrain from allowing your work to appear elsewhere for a period of six months from the date of publication on Nicotiana. After this period has elapsed, your piece can be freely posted to blogs and websites, or resubmitted to other publications. In the event of acceptance at another publication, we ask that you state Nicotiana Magazine as the publication where the piece originally appeared.

Give us something potent and dangerous and beautiful – or something different entirely. We look forward to reading your work.
